3 Killed in Ship Hit and Run Off Kochi

On August 7, nine fishermen were reported missing after their fishing boat collide with a ship 24 nautical miles off the Munambam coast.

What happened?

The nine fishermen were fishing off the coast of Munambam when their shipping vessel collided with a ship about 24 nautical miles off the coast of Munambam.

The nine fishermen onboard the vessel were reported missing after the collision occurred.

Rescue initiated

Initially, two fishermen were rescued and were admitted to the Government General hospital in Ernakulam. Unfortunately, three fishermen hailing from Tamilnadu were reported to be dead and the search is on for the missing crew members.

The Indian Coast Guard was informed and two fishermen were rescued after the accident and they have been admitted to the Government General Hospital in Ernakulam.

The ship responsible for causing the collision has not yet been identified and search is on for identifying the same.

Coast guard surveillance

The Navy has diverted a Sea King helicopter, which was already in air to proceed to the area for search and rescue of survivors.

One Dornier aircraft has also been launched for searching the entire area. Besides, another Dornier aircraft is being deployed to investigate the merchant ships that were in the area at the time of the collision.

A hydrographic survey ship of the Navy ‘INS Jamuna’ is also proceeding to the area for search and rescue of the missing persons. One Advanced Light Helicopter is on standby for deployment if the situation warrants.

The Indian Coast Guard has also diverted an interceptor boat and a ship to the area in addition to a helicopter.

Investigation launched

An investigation has been launched to determine the sequence of events leading to the collision and to identify the vessel responsible for causing the collision.
