Manaus is the capital of Amazonas State in Brazil.  It is also one of the host cities for 2014 World Cup and will host football matches during the 2016 Olympic Games.  The city registers two or three murders every day.  According to recent UN report, gun crime is at its highest in 35 years. About 42,000 people were shot dead in 2012.

In a sudden surge of violence, 35 people were killed in a single day.  A police officer was shot dead outside a bank and at the same time several killings were reported suggesting coordination.

It is not yet known whether the spate of murders is the fallout of drug gang war or the police action to avenge the death of their colleague.  Police involvement is suspected because of the nature of shootings.
