Are Carrier Services Getting More Predictable?

50

In a volatile, under-supplied market, it is a reassuring development when carrier services show signs of improvement. Based on Drewry data, we are reaching a stage where carriers are adding new services or reinstating old ones, significantly expanding the supply for the peak season. Increased competition is enhancing the range of available shipping options, and established carriers are striving to restore their disrupted schedules, reports Drewry.

Key Numbers:

  • Transpacific Loops: Carriers will add 10 new transpacific loops.
  • Asia-North Europe Services: 4 new services between May and July.

The number of carrier competitors is set to rise again after previously shrinking post-pandemic. Notably, Ellerman will re-enter the Asia-Europe route, and SeaLead and BAL Container Line will join the transpacific route.

Decline in Cancelled Sailings:

The delivery of new ships to the market is expected to continue addressing gaps in carriers’ disrupted schedules. Consequently, the number of sailings “canceled” by carriers is declining:

  • May: 62 cancelled sailings
  • June: 51 cancelled sailings
  • July (forecast): less than 41 canceled sailings
