  • Atlantium Marine has unveiled its Purestream™ UV ballast water management system (BWMS).
  • It uses a revolutionary 20-micron screen filter in combination with Atlantium’s proven medium pressure UV technology.
  • It was installed onboard a container vessel and is currently in the shipboard testing phase to acquire IMO and USCG type-approval.

According to an article published in Riviera Maritime Media, the expanded trade and traffic volume of shipping operations over the last few decades have increased the transportation of ballast water globally.

Threat to ecology

Left untreated, ballast water discharge can have devastating ecological problems, impacting native species, regional biodiversity, and economic wellbeing.

Since 2003, Atlantium has been committed to developing environmentally-friendly UV treatment solutions that contribute to a healthy ecosystem and positively impact public health. The company’s innovative UV solutions have been proven to effectively treat the most difficult water treatment applications in the world and have ensured water biosecurity in more than 3,000 full-scale installations globally, including aquaculture, beverage, biopharma, food, general industry, hydro, municipal and power markets.

Purestream™ UV BWMS

Drawing on its profound knowledge and experience in water biosecurity across highly regulated markets and more than a decade of experience in treating aquatic invasive species, Atlantium Marine, a part of Atlantium Technologies, has unveiled its Purestream™ UV ballast water management system (BWMS).

Purestream uses a revolutionary 20-micron screen filter in combination with Atlantium’s proven medium pressure UV technology to achieve unparalleled results. The system is validated to operate at minimum retention times (≤ 24-hours) following treatment of 100% of the maximum flow under difficult water conditions with UV transmittance as low as 40% UVT.

Evaluation and readiness completed

Earlier this year, Atlantium Marine completed the readiness evaluation and the land-based validation. Recently, the company has entered the final stages of the validation process – the Purestream system was installed onboard a 3,854-TEU container vessel Zim Qingdao and is currently in the shipboard testing phase to acquire IMO and USCG type-approval.

Top class service

The company’s exceptional service is built on more than a decade of experience and an understanding of the importance of proper installation. From system specification and integration to working with engineering firms to achieve correct installation to providing reliable maintenance and support globally, Atlantium Marine ensures that shipowners and operators receive a complete and proven ballast water solution. Purestream also requires little pipework, enabling faster and easier installation for retrofit projects with minimal impact on the ship operation – including during the voyage.

Easy to operate and maintain

Another aspect of Purestream’s unique design is its ease of operation and maintenance. Once the ballasting/deballasting process begins and water flows through the system, the Purestream validation allows for continuous and automatic adjustment of flow to provide on-spec ballasting/deballasting.

The third aspect is Purestream’s ability to limit the operational restrictions on the vessel that result from new equipment and its installation. During the ballasting process, Purestream enables the treatment of the worst water conditions with minimal to no retention time restrictions. This is accomplished using a unique approach to fully automated control, minimizing restrictions on the flow and enhancing the filter backwash mechanisms to prevent filter clogging.

Operation optimization and research analysis

Unlike most companies in the market, Atlantium Marine is unique in its ability to develop, validate, integrate and apply a proven UV disinfection ballast water management solution. Its knowledgeable team can help optimize operations by guiding engineering firms in the proper installation and operation of the ballast system.

Atlantium’s strong history of research, development, and innovation, as well as its intimate understanding of micro-organisms and the effect of UV, have been instrumental in allowing the company to take its UV technology into areas where other UV technologies have struggled to be successful. With Purestream BWMS, the company leverages its technical know-how and proven ability to deliver a disruptive best-in-class UV solution for the ballast water treatment market that is supported by its global sales and service network.
