The barge carrier Tide Carrier dragged anchor and drifted dangerously close to rocky shores of Feistein Fyr in Norway.

What happened?

The vessel was anchored south of Bergen when the anchor dragged and started drifting to the shore.

The engine broke down or was under repair during the incident, so the ship was without the ability to manoeuvre. Tide Carrier was drifting dangerously close to the shallows and rocks.

Rescue efforts initiated:

The accident was reported to the local authorities and at the scene was sent tugs and rescue boats.

The tugs arrived, when the ship was on 100 m from the shore and immediately started the rescue operation.

The first attempts to attach the towing lines failed due to short winds and bad weather.

Fortunately a few minutes later the second attempt was successful and the two tugs succeeded to attach the line to the barge carrier.

The complicated situation was brought under control and the vessel was again secured at the anchorage.

Crew evacuated:

During the accident, five crew members were evacuated by a coast guard helicopter due to the immediate danger from grounding.

One of the airlifted seamen was injured and hospitalized.

Fortunately, there were no serious injuries and no water pollution was reported after the accident.

The local authorities initiated an investigation to determine the root cause of the accident.
