On October 1, $20 million worth of cocaine was hauled aboard a cargo vessel and four people were arrested in connection to the incident.

What happened?

This drug haul is considered as the largest single seizure in all of New Zealand until now. Four foreign nationals were arrested in Tauranga after $20 million worth of cocaine was seized after a ship arrived in the port from Chile.

Significant news:

Richard Chambers, Assistant Commissioner Investigations said, “It’s the biggest cocaine seizure our country has ever seen. Police say a syndicate approached the vessel under the cover of darkness, retrieving the cocaine from a hidden compartment on the exterior of the hull”.

Found in an hidden compartment:

Based on a tip off received by the police officials in Tauranga, the police approached the vessel under the cover of darkness and seized the cocaine which were in a hidden compartment under the exterior of the hull. Based on the search warrants executed in Tauranga, Mt Manganui and residential addresses in Auckland culminated in arrests.

Foreign nationals arrested:

Four foreign nationals, two Australian men and a Croatian aged in their mid-forties, and one Serbian national in his mid-thirties, appeared in the Tauranga District Court on charges related to importing the cocaine and possessing the drug for supply.

All four men were granted interim name suppression and were remanded in custody to reappear in court at a later date.
