Freighter Intercepted on Suspicion of Illegal Arm Trading

On January 6, a freighter was detained on the basis and found to be suspicious of trading illegal arms.

What happened?

The freighter ‘Andromeda’ was intercepted by Greek Special Forces off Agios Nikolaos in the Sea of Crete, on suspicion of arms trading, and is taken to Heraklion for a thorough check.

Explosives found:

Upon inspection, the police discovered 29 containers, loaded with explosives and detonators, destined for Djibouti and loaded at Mersin.

The vessel was seized and taken to Misurata to offload the explosives, which is prohibited by internationally imposed sanctions.

Crew arrested:

The captain and the eight crew members including two Ukrainians, five Indians and one Albanian, were arrested.
