In a major development, DNV GL Maritime has said that they believe in the future class and advisory services will become more risk-informed and more data-based, says an article published on their website

Implement progressively risk-based approaches

DNV GL aims to reduce downtime, repair needs, and required inspections. By exploiting risk-based concepts and advanced predictive maintenance and inspection regimes, we develop novel, more effective and efficient procedures, seamlessly integrated with our customers’ processes. Alongside the descriptive approach, DNV GL aims to develop future rules based on functional and probabilistic requirements. This will enable more efficient and “fit for purpose” ships and structures.

Reduce major accident risks

DNV GL’s high ambition is to reduce fatality rates by 90 percent in 2050 below present levels. This requires a new safety mind-set, and a continuous focus on technologies and how organisations are structured and operated. We advance technologies that make structures and systems more resilient. We focus on human factors and support our customers in enhancing operational safety.

Implement life-cycle information management and big data

Big data will change the way the maritime industry works. Increased analysis capability is key to providing our customers with insight and decision-making support. Smart management of inspection information helps assessing the integrity of the structure and systems and moving towards condition-based inspections. We prototype future maritime information platforms to facilitate advanced ship and fleet performance management. Our work relies on efficiently capturing information, and presenting it in a form that effectively supports our customers in handling increasing complexity.

Improve ship capacity and flexibility

DNV GL’s services and tools support a business goal of zero downtime to increase ship and system availability. We identify and exploit opportunities to increase the cargo intake and thereby the earning potential for ships. One path is route-specific solutions. As ships are part of the supply chain we help optimise the overall efficiency by addressing e.g. port turnaround times, fleet planning, scale effects and short sea shipping.

Reducing  life-cycle environmental impact

The maritime industry is increasingly encouraged to reduce its environmental footprint. Working with our customers, DNV GL advances technologies and tools aimed at reducing emissions to air and sea. Our competence covers all the technical, operational, safety and sustainability aspects of alternative fuels, enabling a switch away from traditional, polluting fuels. We also develop knowledge to provide insights on emissions emerging in the public debate like particulate matter and underwater noise.
