Generator Fire on Freighter

On June 18, a bulk carrier freighter caught fire due to a generator fire which erupted onboard the vessel.

What happened?

The 1,013 foot bulk carrier freighter ‘Paul R. Tregurtha’ was ablaze due to a generator fire that erupted aboard the Motor Vessel.

The ship was carrying 68,200 tons of coal, 124,000 gallons of fuel, and 88,000 gallons of caustic soda when the incident occurred. The crew members onboard the vessel were able to contain the fire.

Vessel monitored

The Coast Guard dispatched a vessel to monitor the situation and offer help when required. An investigation has been launched into the incident to determine the cause of the fire. Fortunately, none were injured during the incident and no pollution to the environment was reported.

The vessel owned by the Interlake Steamship Company, is anchored near Point Iroquois, in Whitefish Bay.
