Methanol Moves From Cargo Hold To Bunker

2051

Methanol

Professor Karin Andersson of Chalmers University in Sweden published in FCBI Energy titled Methanol as a Marine Fuel after examining the viability of methanol as an alternative marine fuel.

Methanol, a well-understood and safe chemical to handle had long been overlooked as a low-emissions fuel despite the following attributes:

  • Methanol is abundant, biodegradable and compliant with the strictest international emissions standards.
  • Methanol avoids the need for the expensive cryogenic equipment required for LNG.
  • Current bunkering infrastructure only requires minor modifications to handle methanol.  It is time it moved from cargo holds to their fuel bunkers.
