Kerala government has planned to invest $134.05 million for the development of ports.  These ports would be equipped with bunkering facilities that include container terminal at the proposed new port project at the coastal village of Azhikode.  The government is also proposing the development of six other minor ports for shifting the cargo movement from roads to marine shipping.  This initiative is a result of the public-private partnership where 60-acre land has been acquired for the work.  The master plan for the project is being drawn up by local engineering firm Kitco that include Vizhinjam, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kodungalloor, Beypore and Azheekal.

Lakshmi Narayanan, an official from Kodungallur port has confirmed the progress of dredging works by the Kerala State Maritime Development Corporation (KSMDC) which would be followed up with construction work.
