One of the massive disasters last year was the Tianjin explosion in August.  The incident killed at least 165 people.

Nearly after five months of investigations, the State Council investigatory team has announced 123 people, including five officials at ministerial level, to be responsible for the explosions.  Authorities are continuing the cleanup nearly six months after the explosions.

How the blast occurred:

The investigation revealed that:

  • The disaster was caused by ignition of hazardous materials, improperly or illegally stored at the site.
  • The fire first started in a container through auto-ignition of nitro-cotton, due to vaporization of the wetting agent during hot weather.
  • The fire spread, igniting other chemicals, including ammonium nitrate.
