Roger Agnelli – Man Behind Vale Dies In A Plane Crash

Roger Agnelli and his family died in a plane crash after his private jet crashed into a residential building in Sao Paulo.

Agnelli, his wife Andréia and their two children João and Ana Carolina were reported to be on their way to a wedding in Rio when the plane slammed into houses in northern São Paulo on Saturday afternoon shortly after taking off.

About Agnelli:

  • Agnelli was born on May 3, 1959 in São Paulo to a middle-class family of Italian origin.
  • He pursued economics at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado before joining Bradesco bank.
  • He acted as head of Bradesco’s Bradespar holding company, managing the bank’s large stake in Vale.
  • Later, he joined the miner’s board and crafted an expansion plan for the newly privatised company.
  • Agnelli took over as president and chief executive of Vale in 2001 after nearly 19 years at one of the country’s largest banks, Banco Bradesco, which is a major shareholder in Vale.
  • The period he reigned from 2001 to 2011, Vale’s net profit surged to $22.9bn from $1.3bn, while its shares soared 1,500 per cent.
  • He also held non-executive directorships at companies including WPP of the UK and Switzerland’s ABB.
