Samsung Heavy Industries delivers world’s largest container ship to MSC, reports Baird Maritime.

World’s largest container ship

Samsung Heavy Industries delivered the largest container ship to the Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC). The vessel named Gülsün is the first of the six 23,000 TEU-class vessels that MSC ordered in 2017.

Gülsün represents the largest vessel built for the container shipping industry to date, with 400 metres length, width of 61.5 meters and a height of 33.2 meters. The unit can carry 23,756 20 ft containers.

Scrubber equipped

The container ship is equipped with an exhaust gas cleaning system, to enable it to continue burning high-sulphur bunker fuel after January 2020 when the IMO global regulation will require bunker fuel sulphur content to be capped at 0.5%.

The newbuild is scheduled to sail on its maiden voyage under MSC in the second week of July.
