Ship Design with Crew as the Nucleus of Promotion

1419

The senior delegates of the Tripartite Forum 2018 held in Seoul, South Korea, together came to the conclusion that the shipping industry requires an immediate strong collaboration among shipbuilders, ship owners and classification societies.

What was discussed in the forum?

The concept of human centred design came up as another important outcome of the forum. In accordance with the upcoming important alterations to the design of ship the forum has decided to bag the opportunity to promote ship design with the ship crew as the nucleus of promotion.

How will it be done?

The ship crew will be aided with higher efficiency to operate the ship and hence intensely decreasing the possibility of human error and its dangerous results. The forum delegates also agreed that this can only be accomplished by including a feedback system for the crew members into the new process of building and designing. Involvement of manufacturers of marine equipments, systems and installations along with people connected to the IT industry, automation, digitalisation and other industries directly or indirectly connected to the ship building and designing process will be in full swing in near future.

How to find a solution?

Finding the most effective solution to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and decarbonizing the shipping through innovative processes, still remain the most important objectives of Tripartite Forum. The forum also agreed that the 2050 IMO target will undoubtedly need alterations in hull design, propulsion system and types of fuel, along with the analysis of the current business scenario and logistics. Understanding the GHG intensity of fuels along with port optimisation and efficiency will function as the key factors in the changes that are going to come as far as shipping industry is concerned. In addition to checking GHG emissions, distortion in the market should also be checked simultaneously.

Preparing Ships for Fuels

Discussing the introduction of 0.5% Sulphur Cap on January 1, 2020, the forum found that since the range of compliant fuels to be implemented in the project is not yet available in the market, it will be a very challenging situation to prepare ships for use of that range of fuel and simultaneously ensuring that the incompatible fuels are not contaminated in the bunker tanks. Hence, important planning and thoughtful decisions are to be made in accordance with the design of the fuel system, with minimum standards on layout, volumes and performance of the system supplied by the owners of ship, class and ship builders.

From its beginning days in 2002, the Tripartite Forum understands the chief need for ship safety above all decisions for different projects as well as progress of the shipping industry. Inviting experts from other sectors like transportation and energy supply domain for the betterment of the industry, along with understanding the need for the forum to discuss the operational feedback about the implementation of ballast water management convention, this forum proves that creativity and innovation can go hand in hand when the spirit of working embedded in the collective desire of the participants to work for the betterment of the industry.
