Smoke Inhalation During Welding Process Kills Three

In an unfortunate incident which occurred on Tuesday, three ship workers reportely died after they were rushed to the hospital due to smoke inhalation.

What happened?

The affected workers were rushed to the Tawau Hospital after inhaling smoke when welding leaks on a tanker anchored off Batu Payung, Jalan Tinagat, Apas Parit.

Tawau Fire and Rescue Station Acting Head, Faisal Ahmad said the station was notified about the incident at 3.13pm.

Workers fell unconscious:

“In the incident, two of the victims were on top of the ship while the other had gone inside a section to weld the leaks but fainted after inhaling welding smoke in the enclosed space. Another went in to save his friend and he also fell unconscious.”

“Later the third worker went inside the ship to rescue the other two and he himself also blacked out,” he said in a statement.

Investigation underway:

According to him, the dead victim was identified as Tsen Gaw Min, 29, while his two friends, Jamaludin Lalo and Adi Lalo who were treated at a nearby hospital, died due to intoxication.

The port officials have instigated investigation to determine how the unfortunate incident occurred.
