12 Sailors Missing After Cargo Ships Collide in Pearl River Estuary

On November 27, twelve sailors were reportedly missing after two cargo vessels collided with each other in the Pearl River Estuary.

What happened?

Both the cargo vessels ‘Jiangsu’ and ‘Fujian’ reportedly collided with each other in the Pearl River Estuary. During the collision the cargo vessel ‘Fujian’ reportedly sank and the twelve crew members onboard the vessel were reported missing.

The vessel was loaded with 5,000 tonnes of sand when it collided with the Fujian vessel which was loaded with 5,038 tonnes of steel.

Search initiated:

The residents were alerted by sparks and loud noise from the collision between the cargo vessel. Out of the fourteen crew members onboard the sunken vessel only two have been rescued while search has been initiated for the remaining crew members. The eleven crew members were reportedly safe.

Guangdong authorities have deployed 30 vessels and a helicopter to look for the missing sailors.

An investigation has been initiated to determine the sequence of events leading to collision.
