17 Shore Power Projects Receive $13.6M Funding From Enova

  • Enova, a Norwegian government enterprise, has announced funding support of nearly NOK 143 million (about $13.6 million) for seventeen shore power projects.
  • This investment marks another step in the electrification of maritime transport, with Enova having supported onshore power plant projects with over one billion Norwegian kroner since 2016.
  • The funding aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve working conditions for ships while docked.
  • However, Enova has decided to discontinue investment support for shore power projects following an evaluation that showed a sufficient number of players offering onshore power.
  • Instead, it will focus on supporting the installation of shore power systems in vessels and launching new programs like “Battery in zero-emission ships” to promote battery electrification and develop charging infrastructure for maritime transport.

Enova, a Norwegian government enterprise, has announced funding support for seventeen shore power projects, totaling almost NOK 143 million (about $13.6 million). This investment represents the latest effort in the electrification of maritime transport and aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve working conditions for ships while docked.

Enova’s Contribution

Since 2016, Enova has supported onshore power plant projects with over one billion Norwegian kroner, contributing to the establishment of a market for onshore electricity and publicly accessible infrastructure. However, with a functioning market for shore power now in place, Enova has decided to allocate its funds to other areas.

Project Locations

Enova’s funding will support onshore power projects in various regions including Vestland, Troms and Finnmark, Vestfold and Telemark, Rogaland, Trøndelag, Møre and Romsdal, and Agder.

Previous Projects

The support program has seen one to three application deadlines each year since its inception, resulting in 131 onshore electricity projects being awarded support, with 86 already completed.

Investment Support and Evaluation

Enova’s investment support for shore power projects has been limited to 50% of approved investment costs or a maximum of NOK 20 million per project. However, an evaluation conducted in autumn 2022 showed that a sufficient number of players now offer onshore power, leading to the discontinuation of investment support for shore power projects.

Future Focus

Enova will continue to support the installation of shore power systems in vessels for a limited period and has launched the new program “Battery in zero-emission ships” to promote battery electrification. Additionally, it is preparing a new support program for charging infrastructure for maritime transport to accommodate the growing number of battery-powered vessels.

This funding initiative reflects Enova’s commitment to advancing sustainable practices in maritime transport and contributing to a greener future for the industry.
