18 Crewmen Injured in Oil Tanker Blast

Eighteen crew members of an oil tanker suffered burns, some severely, in an explosion on their vessel off Limay, Bataan Wednesday afternoon, police said.

A report from the Central Luzon police office Thursday said the M/TKR Reia Faye, of Reild Marine Services and Trading, was anchored about one nautical mile offshore and awaiting loading instructions from the Petron Bataan Refinery when an engine malfunction caused the explosion.

“The ship’s engines were being powered-up when the crew heard (an) irregular noise at the engine room followed by (a) burst of flames.  Nearby tugboat operators rescued the crew who jumped into the water,” the report said.

The injured crew members are currently confined at the Bataan General Hospital in Balanga City and St. Michael Hospital in Orion town.

Those who suffered severe burns are:

  1. Vincent Latap, 56, ship captain from Legazpi City, Albay
  2. Steven Kyle Calugay, 19, ship apprentice from San Fernando La Union
  3. Kenneth Guinto, 21, trainee from Dagupan City
  4. Rodgie Francisco, 23, ship apprentice from Cebu City
  5. Danilo Morollano, 23, ship oiler from Bantayan Island, Cebu
  6. Marty S. Manzo, 41, 2nd Engineer from Balogo Calatrava, Romblon

Those with less severe injuries are:

  1. Christian Lexter Doroteo Faner, 25, trainee from Dasmariñas, Cavite
  2. Bryan De Peralta, 25, trainee from Vigan, Ilocos Sur
  3. Celszann Cabanela Celis, trainee from Cogeo, Antipolo City
  4. Armando Leanillo, 61, 2nd Mate (3rd Officer) from Fairview, Quezon City
  5. Restie Siona, 21, apprentice from Karuhatan, Valenzuela City
  6. Maria Theresita Diego, 21, apprentice from Malabon City
  7. Petapaul Bones, 23, apprentice from Navotas City
  8. Agustin Sabidal, 21, apprentice from Patnongon, Antique
  9. James Darwin Oro, 22, apprentice from Iloilo City
  10. John Lester Oro, 23, apprentice from Iloilo City
  11. Cris Raondero, 26, apprentice from Urbiztondo, Pangasinan
  12. Jonarick Garo, 22, checker from Malate Manila
