Clarksons Research conveyed that its World Fleet Register currently shows that, among 130 new build contracts recorded for 2017 so far, 21 – just of 16 percent – are for vessels capable of using LNG bunkers.

Rule for new ships:

Overall, the firm says there are a total 542 merchant ships within the global fleet and on order that are capable of using LNG as fuel.

However 351 of those vessels are noted to be LNG carriers that can utilise cargo boil-off as fuel.

LNG hype:

“LNG has been identified as a cleaner fuel capable of reducing vessel emissions in line with new regulations,” said Clarksons.

“In other sectors LNG fuel has taken longer to gain market share, but there are signs that where ship designs and the supply of bunkers allow, it is becoming more popular.”

According to a report, there were 103 LNG-fuelled vessels in-service at the time, with another 97 on order – a 23 percent year on year increase.
