- MSC offers the most direct port-pairs on Asia-Europe routes, followed by Ocean Alliance and Premier Alliance.
- On Asia-North America routes, MSC and Ocean Alliance lead, but Ocean Alliance has higher call frequency.
- Gemini follows a unique strategy with fewer direct connections, focusing more on shuttle services.
Gemini, Premier Alliance, and MSC have released their 2025 network plans, while Ocean Alliance has yet to announce. However, minimal changes are expected from Ocean Alliance, as its structure remains largely unchanged, reports Sea-Intelligence.
Gemini’s Unique Strategy
Gemini provides fewer direct port-pairs due to a deliberate network strategy focusing on shuttle services. This contrasts with MSC, which provides significantly more direct connections on both Asia-Europe and Asia-North America routes.
MSC Leads on Asia-Europe
On the Asia-Europe route, MSC will offer the most direct port-port connections, followed by Ocean Alliance and Premier Alliance. MSC offers 3½ times more direct connections than Gemini, providing shippers with broader service options.
Competitive Pressure on Asia-North America
In the Asia-North America trade, MSC and Ocean Alliance provide similar levels of direct connectivity, though Ocean Alliance offers a higher call frequency on the port-pairs it serves. Gemini’s focus on shuttles leads to fewer direct connections, setting them apart from the other alliances.
Competitive Landscape for Shippers
Shippers face different service offerings, with MSC providing significantly more direct connections on Asia-Europe, creating more choices for customers. On Asia-North America, MSC and Ocean Alliance offer stiff competition, while Gemini follows a distinct strategy.
Competitiveness Among Alliances
Half of the direct port-pairs are exclusive to a single alliance, creating unique offerings for those alliances. On the other hand, 5%-14% of the direct port-pairs are serviced by all four alliances, intensifying competition on these routes.
