3 Tons of Cocaine on Cargo Ship

On May 8, the Guatemalan authorities intercepted the largest cocaine shipment ever caught in their country.

What happened?

The Guatemalan army in associated with the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a cargo ship in international waters off the Pacific coast.

The cocaine was stashed inside false bottomed compartments on the Tanzania-flagged ship. The authorities have compiled 3 tons of drugs, but the inspection is still on and they expect the figures to rise.

Drugs to be handed over to the U.S

Military spokesman Oscar Perez confirmed that drug which was confiscated was identified as cocaine. He said U.S. authorities were carrying out the search of the vessel and will be the ones to take custody of the drugs.

Thirteen people detained

The thirteen crew members including citizens of Colombia, Ecuador and Peru onboard the vessel were detained in connection to drug trafficking.
