At the recent conference “The New Sustainable Marine Fuels – Decarbonize Shipping”, a significant step toward cleaner maritime operations was taken as Admiral Pellizzari, Maritime Director of Liguria, officially signed a new regulation governing LNG ship bunkering at the Fincantieri shipyard in Genoa Sestri Ponente.
Organized by the Port Authority of Genoa, the event highlighted the region’s commitment to decarbonizing shipping through stringent, internationally aligned safety protocols.
Regulation Highlights
-
Scope: The regulation applies to LNG bunkering via dedicated barge for vessels under construction at the Fincantieri yard.
-
Standards Compliance: Operations must follow IGC, IGF, and ISO/UNI codes, aligning with global maritime safety protocols.
-
Personnel Training: All staff involved must hold STCW-certified training relevant to LNG handling.
-
Risk Management: A thorough risk analysis is required to define safety and controlled zones, with strict activity limitations.
-
Operational Conditions:
-
Clear procedures for authorizations, safety roles, and extreme weather protocols.
-
Defined emergency response measures and active/passive safety mechanisms.
-
-
Mooring Restrictions: The regulation prohibits prolonged mooring of the bunkering barge, permitting only short-term stops in roadstead with inert, certified tanks.
The regulation supports safe and sustainable shipbuilding in Genoa, enhancing the operational framework for LNG bunkering at one of Europe’s major shipyards. It reflects a broader effort by Italy’s Port Authorities, the Liguria Maritime Directorate, and industry leaders like Fincantieri to promote cleaner marine fuel adoption while ensuring maritime safety and environmental protection.
