On August 15, five people were taken into custody on charges of involvement in a minor accident involving a cargo ship and a fishing boat.
What happened?
Five men, three of whom were Indian nationals, were arrested by Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) to facilitate investigations involving the accident. The suspects have been found to be unqualified to handle the navigation of the cargo ship.
The arrested persons are crew members belonging to the cargo ship, the cargo reportedly grazed the right side of the fishing boat.
None injured:
During the minor collision, none of the arrested suspects nor the crew members of the fishing boat were injured.
Although, none were injured, the fishing boat suffered damages since the technical equipment onboard were damaged during the collision and seeked the help of MMEA.
Kuching Maritime District Director Captain, Shahref Steve Mac Queen Abdullah said, “Checks showed the cargo ship had sailed without a qualified skipper and technician as required by the Marine Department”.
Investigation launched:
The MMEA has initiated investigation to determine the cause of the collision.
Shahref assured, “Investigation is being conducted under the Marine Shipping Ordinance 1952. According to Section 71 of the Ordinance, the suspects face a maximum RM10,000 fine or two years’ jail or both if found guilt”.
