On July 9, a freighter reportedly ran aground in the United States. The grounding caused a portion of the river to be closed for marine traffic.
What happened?
The freighter ran aground on the north side of Sugar Island, the U.S. Coast Guard said. Due to grounding,a portion of the St. Marys River was closed for commercial traffic.
Reason for grounding unknown:
The reason for ship running aground remains unknown. Fortunately, no injuries were reported aboard the U.S. ship Calumet, run by Grand River Navigation Inc.
Salvage plans being drafted:
The Grand River Navigation Inc. company is developing a salvage plan to make the vessel refloat. In the meantime, that section of the St. Marys River will remain closed to commercial ship traffic, from the Soo Locks to 6 Mile Point.
