On July 29, around eight containers fell into the sea from a cargo vessel during an offloading operation carried out at the Port of Virginia.
What happened?
The cargo vessel ‘APL Antwerp’ was docked near the Norfolk International Terminals of the Port of Virginia for offloading operations when eight containers fell into Sea.
The U.S. Coast Guard was notified about the incident and were involved in recovering the containers.
Five containers recovered
The rescue team was able to recover five containers out of eight and have reported that three containers have sunk. The Coast Guard is working with the port authority’s Maritime Incident Response Team to recover the sunken containers.
The contents of the containers have not been disclosed and until the sunken containers are dredged, they are considered potential navigational hazards.
