- The Finnish technology group Wärtsilä has been contracted to supply the cargo handling and fuel supply system for two new 98,000 cbm Very Large Ethane Carriers (VLEC).
- The vessels are being built at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in South Korea, with an option for a third vessel.
- This order follows a similar contract awarded in 2019 for three VLECs, also under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries.
- These specialized ships will also feature Wärtsilä’s tailormade reliquefaction unit and a unique high-pressure ethane fuel supply system.
- The entire system will also feature Wärtsilä’s in-house developed remote monitoring and diagnosis tool Operim.
- The new contract comes as an addition to Wärtsilä’s many previous contracts with SHI, featuring among other contracts, solutions for cargo handling systems, LNG reliquefaction and regasification and VOC recovery systems.
Marine technology company Wärtsilä has received a contract for the delivery of cargo handling and fuel supply system for two very large ethane carriers (VLEC), reads the company’s press release.
The contract includes an option for an additional vessel. The 98,000m3 vessels are under construction at Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard.
VLEC with custom reliquefaction units
The repeat order was placed last month. Last year, Wartsila was awarded a similar contract for three VLECs, which were being built at SHI. The ships will be equipped with Wartsila’s custom reliquefaction unit and a high-pressure ethane fuel supply system.
Additionally, the system will feature the newest version of Operim, the remote monitoring and diagnosis tool developed by Warsila.
Ethane fuel for ships
Wartsila Gas Solutions sales and marketing director Kjell Ove Ulstein said, “As the market leader in cargo system designs for VLECs, we are pleased to have been awarded this order. The ships will operate on ethane fuel, so the design of the cargo handling system is very specialised.“
He added, “We have a well-proven track record in delivering highly efficient solutions for these kinds of projects.”
Fuel Efficiency Boost solution
In June, Wartsila received an order to supply its Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) Recovery System and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) Fuel Gas Supply System. The equipment will be provided for two new 124,000 dwt shuttle tankers.
In May, Wartsila received a contract from Kuwait Petroleum Company (KPC) subsidiary Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) to upgrade its four vessels. It will install the Wartsila Fuel Efficiency Boost solution to the main engines of the ships.
