Container Stack Collapse, At Least 100 Containers Lost in Rough Seas

Container ship suffered a container stack collapse due to bad weather, while the vessel was sailing towards the port of Long Beach, reports Maritime Bulletin.

What happened?

The New Panamax boxship is operated by Singapore-based Ocean Network Express (ONE) and deployed in the Pacific South Loop 7 (PS7) service. 

The 2018-built container ship ONE Aquila, owned by Japanese shipping major NYK Line suffered a container stack collapse. According to a statement from Hapag-Lloyd, a THE Alliance’s partner of the ship operator, Ocean Network Express (ONE), the stack collapse was caused by bad weather, while the vessel was sailing towards the port of Long Beach.

Containers affected

The incident has affected a number of containers. The Container ship ONE AQUILA is said to have lost at least 100 containers overboard in the North Pacific midway between Japan and US coast. She was sailing with the storm, in vicinity 40 00N 178 10E in the morning Oct 30, en route from China to Long Beach. 

Safety measures 

To reduce adverse weather impact, the ship turned stb and increased speed to keep wind in stb quarters. 

Delay to avoid congestion

ONE anticipates that the 14,000TEU boxship will be significantly delayed, considering the terminal congestion expected in the California ports.

Recovery plan

The Singaporean line has not yet published a scheduled recovery plan, which will be shared by the company once available.
