USCG Approves Knutsen’s Ballast Water Treatment System

  • KBAL, the ballast water treatment system developed in house by Norwegian tanker operator Knutsen, is the latest system to be given USCG type-approval.
  • The USCG approval covers systems with 400 and 3,000m3/h flow rates.
  • The system is not approved for US flag vessels but can be installed in a hazardous area on foreign-flagged vessels.

According to a recent news article published in ShipInsight, Knutsen wins USCG ballast approval for the ballast water treatment system.

How the system works?

The system which employs a pressure vacuum reactor working in combination with a vertical ballast water drop line.

Ensures a low temperature boiling condition that eliminates the majority of the organisms.

Any remaining bacteria are effectively eliminated by the UV Chamber mounted down steam on the pressure vacuum reactor.

What are the operational limitations

Operational Limitations include salinity between 0 and 50PSU, water temperatures between -2°C to 50°C, a hold time in excess of 72 hours and a UV-dose of 600mJ/cm2.
