Facebook is to add a “dislike” button to its social network, founder Mark Zuckerberg has said. Facebook held a Q and A session in its headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The 31-year-old founder Mark Zuckerberg said on Tuesday, the social network will feature a dislike button to empower people to express empathy. It would soon be ready for user testing. Ever since “like” button was introduced in 2009 users had been constantly requesting for a “dislike” button also.
It is definitely not to be used to “down vote” others’ posts. Instead, it will be for times when clicking “like” on “sad” posts felt insensitive. An expert in social and participatory media at Drexel University in Philadelphia, said users use a dislike button to express some negative emotions (like frustration with ads popping up in their feeds). The dislikes may not be for personal pictures of their friends’ babies, dogs, cats and cooking experiments posted. It would be a form of mild disapproval or solidarity when someone posts about a sad event like a death or a loss.
