The Floating Instrument Platform (FLIP) is an Ocean Research Platform. It is owned by the U.S. Office of Naval Research. The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography operates this platform.
Highlights:
- The Platform is 108 meters long.
- FLIP is designed to study wave height, acoustic signals, water temperature and density and for the collection of meteorological data.
- It can reach the speed of 7-10 knots.
- It has no engines or other propulsions, but should be towed to open water.
- FLIP is 700 gross tons.
- Nearly five crew members and up to 11 scientists can be accommodated in this FLIP.
- It can partially flood and can pitch backward 90°.
