Korean Register Wins The New ‘K-Award’ At KORMARINE Conference 2015, Korea
The Korean Register (KR) was the recipient of the prestigious new ‘K-Award’ in honour and recognition of organizations or individuals for their achievements in the world’s shipping and shipbuilding industries. KR is a member of the IACS classification society.
KR received recognition for their contribution toward the protection of world’s oceans and the marine ecology and their special contribution toward the development of green ship technology.
The US coast guard has for the first time, approved an Asian classification society –KR, as an Independent Laboratory (IL) to undertake tests, inspections, and evaluations for Ballast Water Management Systems.
About the KORMARINE Conference:
This is an event held twice a year. The 4-day program that took place between the 20th and 23rd October 2015, was a platform covering military Shipbuilding, offshore and commercial shipbuilding industry to meet and share the latest insights for the industry’s role in the global economy. The event showcased Korean marine business to the rest of the world. Kormarine was attended by the world’s major Shipyards including Hyundai Heavy, Hyundai Offshore, Hyundai Mipo, Hyundai Samho, Hanjin Heavy and Construction Co Limited, Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Co Ltd, Samsung Heavy Industries, STX Limited and a plethora of smaller yards.
Known to be the world’s most prestigious marine trade show, the event took place at Convention Hall, BEXCO, Busan, Korea .
In May, 2015, KR started the world’s first Green Ship Equipment Test Certification Center which is an international green-ship hub, for developing, testing and evaluating core green-ship technology and technical services.
The main objective of the 4-day event was to (a) Provide a platform for experts in marine and offshore shipbuilding industry (b) Raising awareness in green technology in marine and offshore shipbuilding industry (c) Accelerating the recovery of world economy
The main Theme of the conference was: Green Technology, Green Opportunity.
The event’s Keynote Speech was delivered by Dr. Gi Tack LIM, (Secretary-General, IMO-Korea) was about : IMO’s Role for Sustainable Development and Use of Ocean Dr. B. S. Park, Chairman and CEO of KR, is quoted to have said: “We are honored and delighted to receive the ‘K Award’. It is particularly meaningful for us, because KR is the very first recipient of this important prize. We take this as encouragement and a request from the whole maritime industry to continue our important work to protect the marine environment and enhance eco-friendly technology. We will continue to actively support the development of relevant technology and will research ways of providing technical services of even higher quality”
KR informed of their intention to donate the prize money of KRW 10,000,000 ( US $ 8,800) to an academic institution to further enhance research in maritime technology.
Established in 1960 as a not-for-profit ship classification society, KR became a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) in 1988 and in 1990, became listed in the Institute Classification Clause (ICC) of London Underwriters. KR is presently authorized by around 70 national administrations to carry out statutory services on their behalf.
