Boston Consulting Group and McKinsey & Company are now among an illustrious group of partners supporting the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping – aimed at cutting shipping emissions worldwide, says an article published in Consultancy.eu.

Towards zero-carbon shipping

Launched in 2020 by Danish shipping company Maersk – with a donation from the A.P.Møller Foundation – the Maersk Mc-Kinney Møller Center (MMMC) is a Copenhagen-based not-for-profit organization that runs research and development efforts towards zero-carbon shipping.

Industry goal

Much like freight transport, shipping is a high-emission sector that sustains much of life and economy worldwide – but also contributes 3% of global carbon emissions.

The industry aims to cut this footprint by 2050 – a task that requires multi-stakeholder collaboration across businesses, advisors, industry leaders, and government.

Partnership with stakeholders

aims to be a meeting point for these efforts and has managed to form valuable partnerships with several stakeholders – including global management consultancies BCG and McKinsey & Company, who have signed on as knowledge partners.

Per the Center, partners “take an active role in identifying, demonstrating and maturing viable operational zero-carbon solutions and their transition pathways.”

“Our partners are present at the Center working with colleagues from across the maritime value chain. This level of collaboration is a first in the maritime industry, but we believe the time has come to truly join forces, accelerate the development of solutions and drive the transformation towards Zero Carbon Shipping.”

Vast expertise in sustainability

Both strategic consulting firms have vast expertise in sustainability: BCG is currently helping to develop the world’s largest green hydrogen project off the coast of Denmark, while McKinsey works with the World Economic Forum to track energy transitions around the world – to name a few examples.

Taking action together

Commenting on the partnership, BCG partner Peter Jameson explained how “joining forces, we can together bring a unique and impactful perspective to this complex challenge, which cannot be overcome by individual actors alone, but by taking action together.”

Complementing their expertise is a host of in-depth research, practical knowledge, and industry experience from other members of the partner consortium – which includes Danish Shipping, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency, the American Bureau of Shipping, and several others.
