  • Aker, Yara and Statkraft have established HEGRA with the ambition of creating new industry in Norway.
  • Green ammonia, produced using renewable energy, would enable the production of carbon-free fertilizer, and is a promising zero-emission fuel for the maritime sector.
  • HEGRA will contribute to creating a new industry based on a regional hydrogen and ammonia market.

Norwegian companies Yara International ASA, Aker Clean Hydrogen and Statkraft AS have launched a new firm, HEGRA, to electrify and decarbonise the ammonia plant at Heroya and create a new industry in Norway, reads a press release from Yara Inernational.

HEroya GReen Ammonia

The new company will be equally owned by the three partners, which announced plans for a large-scale green ammonia project in February. The name they have selected is short for HEroya GReen Ammonia.

The ammonia plant decarbonisation project is expected to avoid 800,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually. It could be realised about five to seven years from now, the partners said, if power is available at site and they manage to secure the required public co-funding.

Regional hydrogen and ammonia market

More specific details on the project, such as what renewable energy sources will provide the power and how much would be invested, are not available yet.

HEGRA will contribute to creating a new industry based on a regional hydrogen and ammonia market, whilst ensuring the survival and competitiveness of the Norwegian maritime and processing industries,” said the press release.
