Drewry Reports 0.5% Drop in World Container Index

Drewry’s composite World Container index decreased 0.5% to $9,146.41 per 40ft container this week.

Drewry’s detailed assessment for Thursday, 18 November 2021

  • The composite index decreased 0.5% this week, but, remains 238% higher than a year ago.
  • The average composite index of the WCI, assessed by Drewry for year-to-date, is $7,374 per 40ft container, which is $4,724 higher than the five-year average of $2,650 per 40ft container.
  • Drewry’s World Container index composite index decreased 0.5% to $9,146.41 per 40ft container, but is 238% higher than the same week in 2020. Freight rates from Shanghai – New York gained 3% or $421 to reach $13,139 per 40ft box. Spot rates from Shanghai – Los Angeles grew 1% to $10,038 per feu. However, rates on Shanghai – Rotterdam dropped 3% or $401 to reach $13,400 per 40ft container. Similarly, rates on Los Angeles – Shanghai declined 2% to reach $1,275 per feu. Rates on Rotterdam – Shanghai, Shanghai – Genoa, New York – Rotterdam and Rotterdam – New York hovered around previous weeks level. Drewry expects rates to remain steady in the coming week.
