World’s First Tanker With Green Ammonia Fuel

LMG Marin AS, a Sembcorp Marine subsidiary based in Bergen, Norway, will develop the world’s first tanker that will both be powered by green ammonia and carry it as fuel, according to the company as reported by MarineLog.

Zero-emission yacht

The tanker, the MS Green Ammonia, is being built for Grieg Edge, the Grieg Maritime Group’s dedicated innovation section. The zero-emission yacht will transport and distribute green ammonia fuel from a production facility in Berlevåg, Norway, to the Svalbard island between mainland Norway and the North Pole, one of the world’s most northernmost inhabited regions. Green ammonia will take the place of coal-fired energy.

Conventional ammonia, also known as grey ammonia, is made by combining hydrogen and ambient nitrogen under pressure, resulting in the generation of two tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per tonne of grey ammonia, offsetting the environmental benefits of utilising ammonia as a fuel. Green ammonia, on the other hand, is made from hydrogen generated from water electrolysis and powered by renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, making it a green fuel.

Energy shift

“We are honoured that Grieg Edge has chosen LMG Marin to provide design services for MS Green Ammonia,” said Torbjørn Bringedal, managing director of LMG Marin. “We are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with Grieg Edge, which is at the forefront of establishing new business opportunities in the maritime industry while ensuring sustainability.”

LMG Marin will be able to use Sembcorp Marine’s comprehensive marine and offshore engineering capabilities, strong R&D domain expertise, and technological bench strength in designing and building high-performance and specialised vessels, according to Sembcorp Marine President and CEO Wong Weng Sun.

The Global Center for Maritime Decarbonization was founded by Sembcorp Marine (GCMD).

“The world’s energy shift is happening, and the marine industry has taken the lead in moving the industry ahead toward a greener future,” Wong added. “As a result of this exciting moment of change, new business options and opportunities emerge. Sembcorp Marine is committed to using its profound engineering skills and cutting-edge facilities to make green waves for a more sustainable offshore and marine industry around the world.”
