HMM, a South Korean shipping business, has bunkered a containership using sustainable marine bio-heavy oil, kicking off an offshore empirical test as reported by Offshore Energy.
Empirical test
The ship in question is the 13,154 TEU Hyundai Dream. The bio-heavy oil-fueled New Panamax boxship will be conducting the empirical test for a certain period of time during the voyage.
Korean Register (KR), HMM, the Korea BioEnergy Association, Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), and the Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering announced the successful starting of the bio heavy oil-fueled HMM container ship’s offshore empirical test.
Collaboration project
The test is part of a collaboration among classification society Korean Register (KR), HMM, the Korea BioEnergy Association and shipbuilders Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), and the Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering.
The project partners aim to commercialize bio-heavy oil as an alternative fuel.
Specifically, the parties involved in the biofuel project are cooperating to establish the quality standards, investigate the commercial feasibility, and develop a viable supply chain solution for bio-heavy oil.
