Concordia Maritime, together with Stena Teknik and a German consulting company specializing in ship construction, has launched a technical design study, says an article published on their website.

Converting a P-MAX vessel

The purpose is to investigate the technical possibility of converting and adapting a P-MAX vessel for transport of containers. The assignment also includes producing class-approved so-called “basic design”.

The container segment has in recent years shown a strong development, partly driven by the disruptions that have occurred in international logistics, but also by more structural factors.

The P-MAX vessels’ twin engines, with full redundancy, as well as other dimensions make them, according to initial assessments, possible to convert to container vessels with a capacity of approximately 2,100 TEU.

It should be emphasized that there are a number of technical and, above all, market challenges in converting and adapting the P-MAX vessels to transport of containers and that there is thus a risk that the outcome of the technical design study will lead to the project not being implemented.

When will technical study be completed?

The technical design study is expected to be completed by the end of the second quarter of 2022 and will, in the event of a positive outcome, be followed by discussions with shipyards and possible charterers in order to further explore potential interest. A possible conversion is estimated to take about 3-5 months per vessel.
