Tern Island, Terntank’s first LNG-powered hybrid tanker, has landed in Gothenburg, Sweden, after a long journey from China as reported by LNG Prime.
Hybrid tanker
After a christening ceremony at China Merchants Jinling Shipyard in Yangzhou, the 15,000-dwt vessel set sail for Europe in December.
It landed in Gothenburg on Thursday, February 10 and successfully completed “zero emissions” port procedures, according to Terntank.
The new hybrid tanker will sail on LNG or LBG and has a capacity of 16,500 cbm in 14 epoxy coated tanks.
Connect tankers to power
Tern Island also has a revolutionary hybrid electric power supply system with a battery pack, on-shore power supply, and a DC-Link technology that Terntank claims may cut auxiliary energy use by 99% during port operations.
Terntank said it worked with the Port of Gothenburg to establish the shore connections, making it the “first port in the world to connect tankers to power.”
Two sister vessels are on order at Jinling for the Swedish owner, and they will both service NEOT in the Baltic Sea region as part of a charter arrangement announced in 2020.
Terntank’s AVIC series has been improved for the two-hybrid newbuilds.
The ships were designed in partnership with Terntank by Kongsberg’s Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine.
