Korean Register (KR) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with DSME, agreeing to work together on increased digitization and the development of smart and autonomous ship technology, says an article published in Port News.
Joint council
On the 18th of May, officials from both companies, including the CEOs, signed the MOU.
KR and DSME will form a joint council and collaborate on smart and autonomous ship technology as well as research into digitalization.
The development of a smart ship service to improve ship navigation safety and efficiency, development of Digital Data Exchange technology, development and verification/certification of autonomous navigation technology, joint development of crew training contents, and digital technology for smart yard implementation, which will include smart sea trial operations and digital RT, are all key aspects of the joint collaboration.
Eco-friendly
KR unveiled its big data-based Integrated Survey Center (KR-ISC) last month as the latest move in its desire to be a ‘leading digital categorization society,’ with ‘digital and eco-friendly’ as a future term.
Regardless of industry boundaries, the creation, requirement, and demand for smart technology is a critical worldwide issue.
The shipbuilding industry is following this trend by speeding up the construction of smart yards and securing fundamental technology for autonomous and safe ship operation.
Using research from its own smart ship platform, DSME will lead the development of smart ship and autonomous operation technologies (DS4).
Implementation of smart yards
By employing the Okpo Shipyard’s digital production centre, the company hopes to accelerate the introduction of smart yards by improving workplace safety and increasing operational efficiency.
The Korean Register (KR) was founded in 1960 with the goal of increasing maritime safety, property protection, and environmental protection. KR presently classifies a global fleet of 3,051 vessels with a total tonnage of 77 million GT.
It is based in Busan, South Korea, and has a global network of 66 offices. In 81 countries throughout the world, KR is allowed to provide legislative and certification services.
