  • The agenda focussed on accidental case studies and previous safety efforts by NYK.
  • This year is the 25th anniversary of this campaign.

Discussion

At this year’s meeting, safety activities, including accident case studies to foster and improve safety awareness, were shared. The meeting took place in two languages, Japanese and English. 309 people from 92 companies in Japan and overseas took part.

1997 Campaign

This annual fleet safety management meeting is part of NYK’s Remember Naka-no-Se safety campaign. Based on the lessons learned from the Diamond Grace oil spill in Tokyo Bay in July 1997. The purpose of this campaign is to reconfirm with shipowners, management companies and other parts of the safety operation.

Agenda

The agenda of the meeting was accidental case studies, NYK’s safety efforts, and a review of last year’s activities. They also included the Crew changing issue that came with the COVID-19 pandemic. For the NYK Group, safety is an immovable core tenet that we consider to be the foundation upon which ESG management exists. NYK will continue to cooperate with partner companies to engage in sea shipping services. They aim of achieving zero serious accidents.

ESG Story

In February 2021, NYK released the “NYK Group ESG Story,” which aims to further integrate ESG into the company’s management strategy. It also promotes activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through business activities. In March of this year, NYK released the updated “NYK Group ESG Story 2022,” which introduces initiatives for integrating ESG into the Group’s management strategies. This is set forth in the “NYK Group ESG Story” and provides a partial explanation of the Group’s sustainable growth strategy.

Diamond Grace Oil Spill

NYK also conducts a two-month safety campaign every year from July 1.  This is to ensure that the lessons learned from the Diamond grace Oil Spill on July 2, 1997, remain fresh.

This year will be the 25th anniversary of conducting this campaign.
