The Indian Navy’s sailing vessel and Regent Seven Seas Cruises recently set a new trend by taking woman to the top spots in shipping.
Regent Seven Seas Cruises has appointed Serena Melani as captain of the 700-passenger Seven Seas Mariner cruise ship, making her the first female to helm one of its ships.
Melani began her first shipboard position in 1998, serving on a ship carrying cars and general cargo, after four years she made a switch to the cruise industry.
The Indian Navy’s sailing vessel “Mhadei”, skippered and crewed by all women crew of naval officers today reached her home port, Goa. The Ship’s Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi, a Naval Architect, is also the first woman Skipper of the vessel.
The women officers are set to form an all-women crew that would attempt to circumnavigate the Globe in 2017. To prepare themselves for the arduous voyage, they have undergone theoretical training in Navigation, Communication, Seamanship and Meteorology at the Navy’s various Training Establishments based at Kochi in August last year.
