Wärtsilä And ABB Join Hands Towards The ‘Global Shift’

  • The International Energy Association (IEA) has estimated that over 80% of the world’s electricity will be renewable by 2050.
  • Wärtsilä Energy and Large Motors and Generators at ABB Motion are devising efficient ways to create carbon-free electricity.
  • Modifying the current energy infrastructure without disrupting the electrical supply is a primary challenge in transforming the energy sector.
  • Other challenges include producing a reliable means to maximise the usage of renewable energy.
  • Both companies are designing alternative sustainable fuels for attaining a green and clean future.

Wärtsilä Energy and Large Motors and Generators at ABB Motion are collaborating to reach the net zero target for a cleaner future, reports Wärtsilä.

The Current Scenario

Fossil fuels generate about two-thirds of the world’s electricity, but a global transition towards renewable power generation is taking place. The IEA estimates that over 80% of the world’s electricity will be renewable by 2050.

Achieving this target successfully will require collaboration and innovations between companies.

Wärtsilä Energy and Large Motors and Generators

The President of Wärtsilä Energy, Sushil Purohit and the president of Large Motors and Generators at ABB Motion, Heikki Vepsalainen are collaborating to reach the net zero target. These two industry leaders are working to create more reliable and efficient ways to carbon-free electricity. The primary challenge here is to build feasible means for utilities, nations and industries to maximize the usage of renewable energy.

Wärtsilä’s power system modelling has been carried out for over 150 countries. In most cases, the survey points out that countries must first invest heavily in renewable energy. They also need to ensure that the power system has the flexibility to allow all this energy to be used optimally.

Key reasons for the collaboration

Highlighting the importance of sustainable living, Sushil said that if no efforts are being put to reach the net zero target, then we will be passing on a world that would be no longer habitable. The necessity to make a significant impact is what inspires him.

With the technologies available today, it is possible to achieve net zero and have a feasible 100% renewable power system.

Thus, there is a need to implement a credible energy transition plan to ensure a continuous flow of investments.

Further, describing Wärtsilä’s role, Sushil said their prime job is to develop market-leading technologies, including balancing power plants, energy storage systems, and solutions for life-cycle optimisation. These deliver the flexibility needed for the large-scale introduction of renewables and help customers decarbonise faster.

Solutions

The need of the hour is to transform the energy sector and maximize the use of renewable energy, keeping in mind the consequences of climate change. The primary challenge here is to modify the current energy infrastructure without disrupting the electrical supply.

Sushil explained, “We have developed accurate modelling capabilities for power systems, and this is enabling our customers to plan for a more optimized and future-proof energy mix in their systems.”

Wärtsilä is working to equip alternative sustainable fuels that will play a key role in achieving a green and clean future.

Market leading opportunities through collaboration

Sushil explained that to bring change, we need to work together. Thus the two companies Wärtsilä and ABB have come together to create market-leading solutions that enable customers to accelerate decarbonisation.

Wärtsilä’s expertise in system optimisation and market-leading technology on the balancing side, and ABB’s expertise in motors and generators, together will speed the journey towards decarbonisation.

These collaborative efforts will help lower electricity costs while providing system reliability.
