  • Astomos Energy Corporation, Sustainable Energy Development Co. Ltd., and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha have agreed to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly study the establishment of a marine transportation system.
  • By installing ISOPs on oceangoing vessels, CO2 emissions from marine transportation as a whole are expected to be reduced.

NYK to Participate in Joint Study to Convert Organic Materials Processed aboard Oceangoing Vessels into Fuel, reports NYK.

Background

Astomos Energy Corporation, Sustainable Energy Development Co. Ltd., and NYK have conceded to a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to study the association of a marine transportation system that has less environmental consequence through the practical use of organic substances produced on board ships.

The waste generated on board is stored on the ship’s deck and released at ports from where it is then collected. CO2 is produced through the process of transport and incineration of waste.

On average, 5,000 liters of waste, mainly plastic dust, is generated from a large LPG carrier (VLGC) for every 45-day voyage between Japan and the Middle East. Thus to deal with this problem, NYK has acknowledged an MoU with Astomos Energy and Sustainable Energy, a company specialising to realize a recycling-oriented society by renovating unused resources into energy to begin combined research to formulate an organic fuel conversion business by inaugurating Sustainable Energy’s ISOP system (ISOP) on board ships.

Sustainable energy

Sustainable Energy’s ISOP is a recent organic waste treatment procedure that transforms waste into energy. ISOP can lessen CO2 emissions from the entire organic waste treatment method by modifying the bio-components of the waste into fuel.

ISOP does not employ waste segregation. By installing ISOPs on vessels, CO2 emissions from marine transportation are anticipated to be decreased by operating the treated bio-components as energy.

The three companies will begin with a joint study targeting the culmination of the onboard demonstration test and enactment of ISOP on a vessel by the mid-2020s.
