Nearly more than a million cans are manufactured every year. Ever wondered why it is cylindrical in shape?
Though a sphere has a minimum surface area for the given volume, no corners and no weak points, we don’t use them since when packed close together only 74% of the total volume is taken by the product and the rest is void ,i.e., lower packing efficiency. Then, can we use cuboid shape? The answer is no, as it would be difficult to hold and will have a lot of edges.
Your beverage can has the elements of both cuboid and sphere shape. It also has the maximum packing efficiency. Watch the below video to know more about the engineering behind the soda can!
