  • Amogy’s proprietary ammonia-to-power system will be considered for future shipping projects with Yara Clean Ammonia (YCA) and external partners.
  • Collaboration represents an essential step toward broader adoption of ammonia as a next-generation, carbon-free fuel for the global economy and shipping industry.
  • YCA has ambitious plans to commercialize the use of low-carbon Blue and renewable Green Ammonia to enable decarbonization.

Amogy Inc., a pioneer in emission-free, energy-dense ammonia power solutions, has signed a collaboration agreement with Yara Clean Ammonia (YCA), a decarbonization-focused subsidiary of Yara International ASA, the world’s largest ammonia producer, reported by Globe Newswire.

Zero-emissions solution

Under this memorandum of understanding (MOU), Yara will consider Amogy’s ammonia-to-power system as a zero-emissions solution for future shipping projects.

The companies will also look for opportunities with external partners, such as shipowners, to deliver Amogy’s proprietary technology and YCA’s Clean Ammonia.

Largest Ammonia network

Yara is headquartered in Oslo, Norway, and operates the world’s largest ammonia network, which includes ships, access to ammonia terminals, and ammonia production and consumption sites.

Commercialization

YCA, a Yara subsidiary, has ambitious plans to commercialize the use of low-carbon Blue and renewable Green Ammonia to enable the decarbonization of difficult-to-decarbonize industries such as marine fuel.

The first Bunker Barge will enter service in 2024 as part of YCA’s Scandinavian ammonia bunkering network.

Cracking technology

Amogy has developed a novel ammonia cracking technology that extracts hydrogen from ammonia on-board for use in fuel cells to power its proprietary ammonia-to-power platform, which has already powered a drone and a heavy-duty tractor.

Amogy is currently scaling this energy-dense, carbon-free power system for use in ships to aid in the decarbonization of international shipping.

Amogy also recently announced the first commercial deployment of its technology in an ammonia tank barge in 2023, in collaboration with Southern Devall.

Innovation collaboration

“This collaboration with Yara Clean Ammonia is a natural next step for Amogy after establishing our Norway operations earlier this year,” said Seonghoon Woo, Co-Founder and CEO of Amogy.

“YCA operates a vast global ammonia network and recognizes the value of the compound as a next-generation fuel to decarbonize difficult-to-abate sectors like shipping.”

“This agreement gives Amogy a fantastic opportunity to collaborate with innovators in this space to support further demonstrations of our technology in maritime vessels.”

YCA and Amogy will collaborate as Amogy pursues commercialization of its technology in oceangoing vessels, including potential integrations in tugboats, barges, offshore supply vessels, and other ships.

Expanding opportunities

“Amogy’s collaboration with Yara Clean Ammonia will expand our opportunities to demonstrate and deliver ammonia-to-power technologies to the maritime sector,” said Christian Berg, Managing Director of Amogy Norway.

“I’m very familiar with YCA’s commitment to driving innovation in ammonia production and transportation to support cleaner shipping and food production as a former member of their team.”

“With access to YCA’s ammonia and partner portfolio, Amogy can introduce proven zero-carbon fueling opportunities to more changemakers around the world, moving us closer to our goal of decarbonizing the transportation industry by 2050.”

Global market

Through 2030, the global green ammonia market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 94.6%. With numerous organizations citing aggressive decarbonization targets for transportation and shipping, alternative fuel and power solutions are required to meet these targets.

Ammonia is already a globally traded commodity with existing infrastructure and transportation networks.

Clean ammonia production reduces the compound’s environmental impact for use in transportation and food production applications.

Critical demonstration

Partnerships between companies like Amogy and Yara Clean Ammonia are critical for demonstrating ammonia as a zero-carbon fuel solution and identifying new use cases for clean ammonia within global supply chains.

“Yara Clean Ammonia takes its role in the ammonia and hydrogen ecosystem very seriously.”

“Through this collaboration with Amogy, we can explore valuable applications for ammonia as a fuel within the transportation, export, and trading networks,” said Magnus Krogh Ankarstrand, president of Yara Clean Ammonia.

“We’re excited to support their efforts to further demonstrate the viability of ammonia power technologies in the shipping industry, as well as explore opportunities to integrate their platform into our operations and introduce their technology to existing and future partnerships, as a future decarbonization solution.”
