A 64,000 DWT bulk carrier, which was under construction at CSSC Chengxi Shipyard, caught fire and killed two dockworkers. According to the reports from the shipyard, a diesel leakage near the welding and high temperature operations area, in one of the compartments, caused the fire. The two workers who were inside the compartment suffered severe burns and died on the way to the hospital.
Several firefighters rushed to the spot and contained the fire after a long struggle for nearly five hours. The local authorities have started on their investigations and all the operations at CSSC Chengxi Shipyard were suspended until safety checks are completed, reports say.
