The Real Story Behind The Infamous Car Scene In Titanic

2924

One of Titanic’s most unforgettable scenes, which has been parodied and referenced in other media, took place inside a fancy car aboard the ship, and here’s the true story behind this car. Although James Cameron has been behind some of the most outstanding cinematic achievements in recent years, Titanic still stands as one of his most impressive projects.

Titanic was the most expensive movie ever made at the time and the highest-grossing film of all time for many years, with most praise going towards the performances of the main cast and the crew’s attention to detail, as Cameron made sure to recreate the Titanic as accurately as possible, paying attention to even the smallest details.

Although based on the real-life tragedy of the RMS Titanic in 1912, the movie tells a fictional story, following Rose DeWitt Bukater (Kate Winslet), a first-class young woman, and Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a third-class passenger, as they fall in love aboard the infamous ship.

After drawing the famous nude portrait of Rose, Jack and she ran away from Lovejoy and hid in a car inside the cargo hold, where they had sex. This became one of the most memorable scenes from Titanic, and as it turns out, that car is one of the movie’s many historically accurate details.

The Real Titanic Carried A Car Like Jack & Rose’s Sex Car

The car Jack and Rose had sex in in Titanic was a 1912 Renault Type CB Coupe de Ville, and the sex scene isn’t the only time that the car shows up in the movie. The car can be seen being hoisted onto the ship at the beginning, as the camera pans to show the passengers arriving at the port and their fascination at the huge, “unsinkable” ship. Like many other details in Titanic, the addition of that specific car model wasn’t a random decision, as there was a car like that aboard the real Titanic, and it was the only car on board.

According to Historic Vehicle, the Titanic’s cargo manifest listed one automobile “case” onboard, and it was a 1912 Renault Type CB Coupe de Ville, owned by a first-class passenger named William Carter. The car was purchased in France and was stored in the port side Orlop Deck storage area of the Titanic, and Carter was traveling with his wife, Lucile, their children Lucile and William, their maid, manservant, and chauffeur. The Carter family survived the sinking of the Titanic, but the car sank to the bottom of the ocean, leading Carter to file a claim against White Star Line for the value of the car.

However, what happened to the car after the Titanic sank is a mystery. Since the ship was discovered at the bottom of the North Atlantic, many expeditions have tried to locate the car, but they have all been unsuccessful. The closest they have gotten to finding the car was a photograph taken by a research team which showed what appeared to be the car’s left front wheel and fender. Now that the car has been there for over 100 years, it’s highly unlikely any remains could be found.

Titanic Is Full Of Historically Accurate Details

The car Jack and Rose have sex in isn’t the only historically accurate detail in James Cameron’s Titanic. Aside from the characters who were based on real-life passengers of the ship, Cameron made sure that every detail in the ship was as accurate as possible. For that, the sets of the interior rooms of the Titanic were reproduced exactly as originally built, with photographs and plans from the ship’s builders used as references.

The Grand Staircase was recreated to a high standard of authenticity, craftsmen from different parts of the world sculpted the ornate paneling and plaster-work based on the ship’s original designs, and details like the carpeting, chairs, cutlery, and more were also recreated according to original designs. To ensure all these details were accurate, James Cameron hired two Titanic historians, and the result was a movie with an unbelievable amount of attention to detail.
