Anglo American’s recent dual-fuel Capesize+ bulk carrier

Global mining company, Anglo American, has announced that its recently launched liquefied natural gas (LNG) dual-fuel Capesize+ bulk carrier, the Ubuntu Harmony, has been loaded with its first cargo of iron ore from the company’s Kumba operations in South Africa.

The 190,000-deadweight tonnage vessel is the first of ten LNG dual-fueled bulk carriers that Anglo American has added to its chartered fleet between 2023 and 2024 and is expected to contribute to a 30% reduction in CO2 emissions for the company by 2030.

“The metals and minerals we provide play an important role in helping key industries decarbonize,” stated Nolitha Fakude, Anglo American Group South Africa Director, adding, “Transporting them in a sustainable way is a key part of this effort and the introduction of the Ubuntu fleet – named after the Zulu word meaning ‘humanity to others’ – helps us accelerate our transition to sustainable ocean freight.”

Reduction of nitrogen oxides

The use of LNG is poised to reduce nitrogen oxides and particulate matter from the vessel’s exhausts while mitigating the release of unburnt methane, thus contributing to Anglo American’s target of achieving carbon neutrality for its controlled ocean freight operations by 2040.

“We are proud to see the Ubuntu Harmony begin its voyage transporting future-enabling products from our mines to our customers around the world,” stated Peter Whitcott, Anglo American Marketing Business CEO, adding, “This milestone cements our vision to be a leader in the low carbon shipping, a natural extension of our commitment to achieve carbon neutrality across our operations by 2040.”

Constructed by marine engineering and construction company, Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding and owned by bulk cargo transportation group U-Ming Marine Transport, the chartered Ubuntu Harmony will be followed by the fleet’s second LNG dual-fuel vessel, the Ubuntu Equality, which is expected to load her first cargo from South Africa in February.
