Vale International SA (VALE; CEO: Eduardo Bartolomeo Headquarters: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. (MOL; President & CEO: Takeshi Hashimoto, Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo) have announced a partnership to retrofit a 200,000-ton class bulk carrier currently used under a mid-term contract for transporting iron ore for Vale with two 35m x 5m rot (Norsepower; CEO: Tuomas Riski, Headquarters: Helsinki, Finland).

Rotor sail installation

In the first half of 2024, the rotor sail installation is anticipated.

The system, when the ship is sailing, produces a thrust as the wind creates differential pressure around the slewing rotor. With the help of this approach, the ship should be able to reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by 6–10%, while also utilising voyage optimization technologies to make substantial progress towards decarbonization goals.

In order to reduce GHG emissions and ensure stable iron ore transportation, MOL and VALE will keep working.
